Natural Silver Cleaner and Tarnish Remover

with No Comments

Ani’s Natural Silver Cleaner is a great alternative to those stinky chemical tarnish removers! With just three ingredients that everyone has on hand all the time, you can’t beat this recipe. This stuff is a life saver!

We’ve all seen those commercials for the new liquid de-tarnisher back in the 1970’s and 80’s. They dip a blackened piece into a bath of the product and out comes a shiny silver piece. Like magic!

I remember being so impressed by this that I made sure my mom bought some the next time we went to the store.

Ani’s Natural Silver Cleaner works just as well and could be a fun little chemistry experiment for the kids also.  If anyone knows for sure what type of reaction this is, a friendly comment after this post is most appreciated.  I’ve heard it’s an endothermic reaction and also and electrochemical one but not being a chemistry expert or having a ton of time to continue researching it I’m gonna leave it by saying I’m just not sure.  It will actually smell very similar to the way the store bought product smells for a few seconds. I guess this is the sulfur gasses being released.

I’ve been doing this for years now, with great results!  It works best with Sterling Silver or better quality silver plate. The jump on this bracelet attaching the heart charm didn’t come out totally clean which tells me it must be a lesser silver than the rest of the piece.

The amounts of each ingredient aren’t exact either. Just multiply this 10 or 20 times for a large serving tray or whatever and this will save you a ton of money on expensive removers.  This doesn’t put any protective film on like some of the paste versions do, so if you want that, I suggest using those after you have de-tarnished a piece using my natural silver cleaner method.

Ani’s Natural Silver Cleaner

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp Baking Soda
  • 1 foot Aluminum Foil
  • 4 oz. Boiling Water

Instructions:

Place foil in a container with the dull side up so that your silver will rest on this side. Add your baking soda and then add your silver jewelry or whatever piece you are trying to de-tarnish.  Make sure that the silver is touching the foil!   If it is a large piece, like a coffee pot you can place another piece of foil over the top.  Add your boiling water.  Wait for about 10 min. and then carefully remove pieces with tongs or something so as not to burn yourself. Wash the pieces with dish soap and a soft cloth and rinse. This will wash off any left on tarnish. Voila!
